Goodwood Islamic Centre
Location - Leicester
Client - Goodwood Community & Educational Trust
Our Role - Architect
Project Value - £1.9m
The Goodwood Islamic Centre was designed as a new place of worship and community centre, replacing outdated buildings already on the site. Occupying a prominent corner in a busy suburb, the project includes a Mosque and Madrasah, together with ancillary community spaces. Whilst the brief was to provide the most flexible use of space, there were a number of specific design requirements such as women’s facilities/access and provision for supporting interfaith initiatives. In addition, the centre remained in partial use during construction.
The Centre serves multi-generational families and as such, the balance between classical/modern & Western/Islamic inferences were carefully considered. Its exterior incorporates clear Islamic features such as arches, Minaret and copper dome while the interior uses modern geometry alongside lattice walls and Islamic calligraphy to provide beauty and mystique. The Centre is funded by the local community and the sense of participation and ownership of the design throughout the building is clear.
